Welcome to GUNG HO ADVENTURE RACE 2012
We organized the first GUNG HO ADVENTURE RACE in 2011 to help attract new and seasoned participants to the great sport of Adventure Racing. We saw a mixture of experienced adventure racers, duathletes and triathletes that were looking for a change, “mud race” participants that wanted to step up to adventure racing and first time participants. We had 100 participants in our first year and look to build on that number. We will be holding 2 races again this year. A 4 hour race for novice adventure racers and a 10 hour race for the more experienced.
4 Hour Race Description (1pm-5pm)
This race is designed for novice adventure racers. Teams of 2 or 3 will run/trek, mt. bike, canoe and employ very basic map reading. The running /trekking will be a mix of pavement, dirt trails and off trail. (Off trail or bushwacking will be optional). The mt. biking will be on pavement and trails. We suggest you use a mt. bike (not a hybrid) and have some experience on trails other then rail trails. We design the course knowing that there will be many novice riders. The canoeing will be on flat or lake water. There is no set course for adventure races. Basic map reading and decision making will determine how you get from checkpoint to checkpoint.
This 4 hour race is designed to easily allow nearly every team to finish the mandatory course in roughly 3 hours. 4 hours is the cutoff time for this race. If teams feel they have extra time and energy, they will be able to visit optional checkpoints to accumulate extra points.
The 4 hour race will be limited to 30 teams.
10 Hour Race Description (7am-5pm)
The 10 hour race is designed for the more experienced adventure racers but the course can be completed by anyone with a fair amount of athletic endurance. Teams of 2 or 3 will run/trek, mt. bike, canoe and navigate using topo maps and a compass. There will also be a rope section. (Rope sections will be optional). The running /trekking will be a mix of pavement, dirt trails and off trail. The mt. biking will also be on pavement and trails. We suggest you use a mt. bike (not a hybrid) and have experience riding on single track. The canoeing will be on flat or lake water. There is no set course for adventure races. Basic and advanced map reading and decision making will determine how you get from checkpoint to checkpoint.
The 10 hour race is designed to allow nearly every team to finish the mandatory course in roughly 7 to 8 hours. 10 hours is the cutoff time for this race. If teams feel they have extra time and energy, they will be able to visit optional checkpoints to accumulate extra points.
The 10 hour race will be limited to 30 teams.
New for 2012 is the addition of our 10 hour race to the East Coast Adventure Racing Series (ECARS). The ECARS is a series of 9 races plus a championship race in Sept. Please visit the ECARS website for more info on the series.
